Everything between your first application and an Australian passport.
Universities and intakes, the profile checker, the Genuine Student statement, money you must prove, the CoE, subclass 500, work rights, the 485, skilled PR, your parents' visas, and citizenship — in the order you actually need them.
Five things that decide your outcome
1 · Your course must make sense
The Genuine Student assessment asks why this course, at this provider, after that history. A sharp career logic beats an impressive-sounding degree that doesn't follow from anything you've done.
2 · Money must be genuine, not just present
A balance that appeared last week reads as borrowed. Show the source, the history and the person's capacity to have saved it.
3 · Your provider's tier affects your wait
Processing is prioritised by provider under the current ministerial direction and the National Planning Level. The same file can move at different speeds at different institutions.
4 · Post-study rights are age- and stream-gated
The 485 needs you to be 35 or under at lodgement for most streams (up to 49 for Masters by Research, PhD, and Hong Kong/BN(O) holders), with IELTS 6.5 taken within 12 months, in-centre.
5 · PR is a points race, not a queue
65 points gets you into the pool. Invitations for popular occupations have been landing well above that. Choose the occupation before you choose the course.
Which pathway are you on?
Answer three questions. This sets the defaults used by the calculators throughout the portal.
What changed recently

Profile & program eligibility checker
Enter your marks, backlogs, gap and English exactly as they are. This maps them onto Australian entry bands, tells you which program levels are open, which are borderline, and precisely what you'd have to fix.
What is open, borderline and closed
Filtered by your academic band and your stated tuition budget. Indicative only — every program sets its own bar.
Academic entry requirements, by program level
| Program | Prior qualification | Typical academic bar | English | Other prerequisites |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ELICOS (English) | None | — | Below the course requirement; packaged 10–40 weeks ahead of the main course | Packaged CoE issued with the main course |
| VET Certificate III–IV / Diploma | Year 12 or equivalent | Pass | IELTS 5.5 (5.0 with ELICOS) | Trade courses may require a practical assessment. Leads to the 18-month Post-Vocational 485. |
| Foundation / diploma pathway | Year 12 with modest marks | 50–60% | IELTS 5.5 | Articulates into year 1 or 2 of a bachelor at the partner university |
| Bachelor degree | Year 12 / higher secondary | 60–75% depending on university and course | IELTS 6.0–6.5, no band below 5.5–6.0 | Subject prerequisites: maths and physics for engineering; chemistry and biology for health |
| Graduate Certificate / Graduate Diploma | Bachelor in any discipline | 50–60% — the standard rescue route for lower marks | IELTS 6.5 | Credits into the masters on completion at most providers |
| Master by coursework | Bachelor — a 3-year Indian bachelor is accepted for most coursework masters | Go8 65–75% · technology universities 60–65% · regional 55–60% | IELTS 6.5, no band below 6.0 | Cognate degree required for specialised entry; 1.5-year versions need a matching bachelor |
| Master by research | Bachelor with honours, or a coursework masters with a research component | Distinction average, roughly 70%+ | IELTS 6.5–7.0 | A supervisor must agree to take you before admission. 485 age limit rises to 49. |
| PhD / doctorate | Masters by research, or honours class I/IIA | Research output and a research proposal matter more than the raw mark | IELTS 6.5–7.0 | Supervisor agreement plus a proposal. Scholarships are competitive and cover fees plus a stipend. |
English by discipline
| Discipline | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Student visa floor SC 500 | IELTS 6.0 overall — or 5.5 packaged with at least 10 weeks of ELICOS |
| Undergraduate, general | IELTS 6.0–6.5, no band below 5.5–6.0 |
| Postgraduate coursework, general | IELTS 6.5, no band below 6.0 |
| Nursing | IELTS 7.0 in every band — an AHPRA registration requirement, not just an admission rule |
| Teaching | IELTS 7.5 speaking and listening, 7.0 reading, 6.5 writing — the AITSL standard |
| Law, media, psychology, social work | IELTS 7.0, no band below 6.5 |
| Engineering, IT, business | IELTS 6.5, no band below 6.0 |
| Temporary Graduate 485 | IELTS 6.5 overall, no band below 5.5 — one in-centre sitting within 12 months |
Backlogs, gaps & second attempts
| Situation | Practical effect |
|---|---|
| 0–5 backlogs | No material effect at most universities, including the Go8. |
| 6–10 backlogs | Go8 admission becomes difficult; technology and regional universities generally still consider you. |
| 11–15 backlogs | Regional and private providers only, usually with a written explanation. |
| 15+ backlogs | Direct degree entry is unlikely. A VET diploma or graduate certificate is the realistic entry point. |
| Gap under 2 years | Normally accepted without comment if you can document what you were doing. |
| Gap 3–5 years | Needs employment evidence — payslips and letters — tied to the course you're applying for. |
| Gap over 5 years | Admissible, but the Genuine Student answer must explain why now, and why this course rather than continuing your career. |
| Repeat years / failed semesters | Disclose them. Transcripts show them anyway, and an undisclosed failure damages credibility far more than the failure itself. |
Course prerequisites that catch people out
- Engineering — Year 12 mathematics and physics for a bachelor; a cognate engineering bachelor for a 1.5–2 year masters. Accreditation by Engineers Australia matters for your later skills assessment.
- Nursing — a pre-registration Master of Nursing requires an existing nursing qualification or registration. Without one, you need a 3-year Bachelor of Nursing. AHPRA registration needs IELTS 7.0 in all four bands.
- Teaching — you must have curriculum teaching areas in your prior degree, and you will sit the LANTITE literacy and numeracy test before graduating. Check state registration rules before enrolling.
- Psychology — only an APAC-accredited sequence leads to registration. A generic masters in psychology often does not.
- Architecture — a portfolio plus an accredited bachelor of architectural studies. General design degrees rarely satisfy entry.
- MBA — most reputable programs want 2–5 years of professional work experience; entry without it usually means a Master of Management instead.
- Accounting — for a CPA/CAANZ skills assessment the program must cover the required competency areas. Confirm the mapping before enrolling, not after.
- Any registration-gated health course — ask in writing whether international students are guaranteed a clinical placement. It is the most common reason a health degree stalls.
Universities
The Group of Eight plus the technology and regional universities that most international students actually enrol in. Filter by state, group, or the regional classification that earns you extra post-study years and migration points.
Category 1, 2 and 3 — the geography bonus
| Category | Where | What it gets you |
|---|---|---|
| Category 1 | Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane | No regional study bonus. Highest rents, deepest job market. |
| Category 2 | Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Newcastle, Wollongong, Geelong, Hobart | Regional for migration purposes: 5 points for regional study, extra post-study year in the Second Post-Higher Education Work stream, and access to 491 nomination. |
| Category 3 | All other regional Australia — Toowoomba, Townsville, Cairns, Ballarat, Bendigo, Wagga, Launceston, Darwin, Rockhampton | Largest additional stay, strongest state nomination interest, lowest living costs, thinnest graduate job market. Trade-off is real. |
Programs & intakes
Australian universities run two major intakes and, at many providers, a third. Work backwards from the intake, not forwards from today.
February
The main intake. Widest program choice, full scholarship rounds, largest cohort, best casual-job timing (retail hires before Christmas).
Apply: May–October the year before. Lodge visa: by early December.
July
Second major intake. Most postgraduate coursework and business, IT, engineering programs run. Some cohort-based degrees (medicine, some honours) do not.
Apply: October–April. Lodge visa: by early May.
Nov
Offered by trimester providers (Deakin, Swinburne, Torrens, CQU and others). Smaller, faster, fewer electives — useful for catching up or an early start.
Apply: June–September. Lodge visa: by early September.
Build your timeline
What people study, and what it leads to
| Field | Typical program | Length | Indicative fee/yr | Migration relevance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nursing | Master of Nursing (pre-registration), Bachelor of Nursing | 2–3 yrs | $36k–$48k | Strong. Registered Nurse is consistently invited; AHPRA registration required. |
| Engineering | Master of Engineering (civil, mechanical, electrical, mining) | 2 yrs | $44k–$56k | Strong, but ICT-adjacent branches are competitive. Engineers Australia assessment. |
| IT & cyber | Master of IT, Cybersecurity, Data Science | 1.5–2 yrs | $42k–$55k | High demand, high competition — invitation cut-offs for ICT sit at the top of the range. ACS assessment. |
| Teaching | Master of Teaching (early childhood / primary / secondary) | 2 yrs | $32k–$42k | Strong, especially early childhood and secondary STEM. AITSL assessment plus state registration. |
| Accounting & finance | Master of Professional Accounting | 2 yrs | $38k–$52k | Occupation ceiling fills fast; expect a high points bar. CPA/CAANZ/IPA assessment. |
| Construction & trades | Master of Construction Management, VET trade quals | 1.5–2 yrs | $34k–$48k | Construction managers and licensed trades are in genuine shortage. VETASSESS / TRA. |
| Health & allied | Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Medical Lab Science | 2 yrs | $45k–$62k | Strong, registration-gated. Check clinical placement availability for internationals before you accept. |
| Business & management | MBA, Master of Management, Marketing | 1.5–2 yrs | $40k–$70k | Weakest direct migration link. Choose it for the career, not the visa. |
| Agriculture & food | Master of Agricultural Science, Food Technology | 2 yrs | $36k–$46k | Under-subscribed with real regional demand — often the smartest points play. |
Applying to universities
From shortlist to accepted offer. Ten steps, in order, with what each one actually requires.
Shortlist three to five programs
One reach, two realistic, one safe — and check each against the occupation you intend to have assessed later. Confirm the program is CRICOS-registered; if it isn't, no student visa can be granted for it.
Check entry requirements against your own transcript
Universities publish country-specific equivalence: a percentage or GPA from your institution, plus program prerequisites. A 65% from one Indian university is not treated as the same as 65% from another — find your institution's tier on the provider's international entry page.
Sit English if you don't already have it
The visa floor is generally IELTS 6.0 overall (5.5 with a packaged ELICOS), PTE 50, TOEFL iBT 64. Universities routinely require more — 6.5 with no band under 6.0 is common, 7.0 for nursing and teaching. Book early; scores take about two weeks.
Assemble the academic file
Transcripts and completion certificates for every qualification, an English proficiency result, passport bio page, CV, and — for postgraduate applications — a statement of purpose and two references. Scans must be clear, complete, and colour.
Apply directly or through a registered agent
Direct applications are free at most universities. If you use an agent, confirm they are listed on the provider's official agent page and never let anyone else hold your passport, sign your forms, or access your ImmiAccount.
Receive a conditional or full offer
Conditional offers list what's outstanding — final transcript, English score, deposit. Read the fee schedule, the refund policy and the credit granted for prior study before you do anything else.
Request credit / RPL if you have prior study
Credit shortens your course, which lowers tuition and living-cost evidence — but too much credit can shorten the course below the two-academic-year threshold that the 485 requires. Model both outcomes before accepting.
Clear the conditions
Submit final results, re-sit English if needed, or accept a packaged ELICOS. Ask for a written full offer once conditions are met — a conditional offer cannot produce a CoE.
Accept and pay the initial fees
Usually one semester's tuition plus Overseas Student Health Cover for the full visa period. Pay from an account you can evidence, in the student's or sponsor's name, and keep the receipt and the SWIFT trail.
Provider issues the Confirmation of Enrolment
The eCoE is generated in PRISMS and is the document your visa application is built on. Check every field — name spelling, date of birth, course code, start and end dates, tuition figure — the day you receive it.
What you pay during the application stage
| Item | Indicative cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| University application fee | $0 – $150 | Waived by most providers and by agents |
| IELTS / PTE | ₹17k–₹22k / A$375–A$450 | Book an in-centre sitting only |
| Document attestation / notarisation | $30 – $120 | Some providers require certified copies |
| Tuition deposit | One semester, $12k–$28k | Refundable per the provider's policy if the visa is refused — check the wording |
| OSHC, full visa length | $650 – $850/yr single | Must cover the entire visa period, paid upfront |
| Health examination | $180 – $400 | Panel physician only |
| Biometrics / police certificate | $25 – $120 | Where required by nationality |
| Visa application charge SC 500 | $2,500 | Non-refundable, even on refusal |
The Genuine Student requirement
Since 23 March 2024 the GS requirement replaced the old Genuine Temporary Entrant test. You no longer write one long essay — you answer targeted questions, and the decision-maker weighs your whole circumstances against them.
GTE → GS
The old test asked whether you intended to stay temporarily. The GS requirement asks whether you are a genuine student — while explicitly acknowledging that many students will later apply for skilled visas. Saying "I want to build a career in Australia" is no longer fatal; being unable to explain your course is.
How it is assessed
Your answers are read against your documents. A claim that isn't supported by what's in the file counts against you. The decision-maker also weighs your provider's record, your country's evidence level, and any earlier visa history.
What you are actually asked
01 · Your circumstances at home
Family, employment, financial position, community and property ties, military service obligations, and anything that explains why you are leaving now. Economic or political conditions at home are relevant and can be stated plainly.
02 · Your potential circumstances in Australia
Where you will live, who you know here, what support you have, and how you will manage. Relatives in Australia are disclosed, not hidden — undisclosed relatives found later are far more damaging than declared ones.
03 · Value of the course to your future
The core question. Name the role you are aiming at, the salary and employer type, and the specific units in this program that get you there. Generic praise for Australian education scores nothing.
04 · Your immigration history
Every prior visa, refusal, cancellation and overstay — anywhere in the world. Disclose refusals and explain them. A refusal you declared is a fact; a refusal they find is a credibility finding.
05 · If you are under 18 — the parent or guardian's intentions
Welfare arrangements, accommodation approval from the provider, and the consent of both parents or the legal guardian.
Test your own answers before a case officer does
Tick only what is true and evidenced in your file.
How to write the course-choice answer
Strong
- "I have three years as a staff nurse at [hospital]. I want to move into critical care, which requires a postgraduate qualification my current employer recognises."
- Names two or three subjects from the actual handbook and says why each matters.
- Explains the fee gap honestly: "my father's business generated ₹X over the last four years; the audited accounts and ITRs are attached."
- Addresses the obvious objection directly — a study gap, a change of field, an earlier refusal.
Weak
- Praise for Australia's "world-class education and multicultural society" with no reference to the course.
- A career plan that any degree would serve equally well.
- An unexplained switch — engineering to hospitality, medicine to business — with no bridge.
- Text that reads as templated. Officers see thousands of these; identical phrasing across applicants is noticed.
- Claims about a sponsor's income that the bank statements don't support.
Document checklists
Four checklists, in the order you'll need them. Progress is kept while this page is open.
- Colour scans of originals. Photographs of documents on a desk are rejected by some assessors.
- English translations by an accredited translator (NAATI where possible), attached to the original.
- File names that say what they are: Passport_Bio.pdf, not IMG_2213.jpg.
- Every page of a multi-page document, including blank reverse sides of bank statements.
- Name spelling identical across passport, transcripts, bank records and the CoE. Fix mismatches before lodging.
- Bank statements showing transaction history, not just a balance certificate.
- Nothing edited, retouched or reconstructed. Document fraud results in refusal and a three-year exclusion under PIC 4020.
- Upload everything at lodgement. A "decision-ready" application is processed faster than one the department has to chase.
Financial capacity
You must show genuine access to first-year tuition, twelve months of living costs at the prescribed rate, return travel, and — if they come with you — your family's costs. Not a balance. Access, with a credible source.
Your financial matrix
Realistic total cost of the whole course
What part-time work realistically covers
What counts, and what gets you refused
Accepted
| Bank deposits | Held for at least three months with visible transaction history. Term deposits, savings accounts, fixed deposits. |
| Education loan | A disbursement-ready sanction letter from a recognised financial institution, in the student's or a close relative's name. Loans against property are the strongest form. |
| Scholarship | A formal award letter stating the amount and duration. |
| Government or employer sponsorship | A sponsorship letter with the sponsoring body's undertaking. |
| Annual income of a parent or spouse | Personal income of A$87,856 (student alone) or A$102,500 (with family) for the 12 months before lodging, evidenced by official tax records. |
Red flags
- A large deposit landing days before lodgement with no explanation of source.
- Funds held by a distant relative or a family friend with no legal relationship to you.
- Cash gifts without a gift deed, donor bank trail and donor income evidence.
- Property valuations offered in place of liquid funds or a sanctioned loan.
- Balance certificates with no transaction history behind them.
- A sponsor's declared income that their tax records don't support.
- Any document that has been altered — this triggers PIC 4020 and a three-year bar.
Financial matrix by household
| Household | Living costs, 12 mths | + Tuition yr 1 | + Travel | + Schooling | Indicative evidence needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single student | $29,710 | $42,000 | $2,500 | — | ≈ $74,210 |
| Student + partner | $40,104 | $42,000 | $5,000 | — | ≈ $87,104 |
| Student + partner + 1 child (pre-school) | $44,553 | $42,000 | $7,500 | — | ≈ $94,053 |
| Student + partner + 1 child (school age) | $44,553 | $42,000 | $7,500 | $13,502 | ≈ $107,555 |
| Student + partner + 2 children (school age) | $49,002 | $42,000 | $10,000 | $27,004 | ≈ $128,006 |
Tuition shown at $42,000 as a placeholder — substitute your own CoE figure. Living-cost rates are indexed periodically; confirm the current rate before lodging.
The Confirmation of Enrolment
The eCoE is the hinge of the whole process. No CoE, no student visa — a letter of offer is not a substitute.
Accept your offer in writing
Sign and return the acceptance agreement. Read the refund schedule in it — specifically what happens to your deposit if the visa is refused, and what "administration fee" is deducted.
Pay the tuition deposit
Usually one semester. Pay through a traceable channel from an evidenced account. Keep the SWIFT copy and the receipt — you will upload both.
Buy OSHC for the full visa period
Not the course period — the visa period, which runs past your course end date. Buy through the provider's preferred insurer or directly from any approved fund; both are accepted.
Provider creates the eCoE in PRISMS
The government system that records every international enrolment in Australia. Turnaround is typically 1–5 business days after payment clears.
Audit every field the day it arrives
Name exactly as in your passport, date of birth, nationality, CRICOS course code, course start and end dates, total tuition, and the amount already paid. An error here becomes an error in the visa grant.
Package multiple CoEs correctly if you're studying more than one course
ELICOS plus a degree, or a diploma plus a bachelor, needs a CoE for each course, and the visa is granted against the whole package. Gaps between courses of more than a couple of months attract questions.
Deferral
Providers will defer to the next intake for documented reasons. The old CoE is cancelled and a new one issued — if you have already lodged, tell the department immediately.
Visa refused after CoE
Request a refund under the written agreement. Most providers refund tuition less an administration fee where refusal is not due to fraud. Refusal caused by fraudulent documents usually voids the refund entirely.
Changing provider after arrival
Condition 8516 requires you to remain enrolled in a course at the same level. Within the first six months you generally need a release letter from your original provider.
Once studying you must
- Maintain enrolment in a registered course at the same or higher AQF level 8516
- Meet course progress and attendance requirements set by your provider
- Keep OSHC current for your entire stay 8501
- Notify your provider of any address change within 7 days 8533
- Stay within 48 hours of paid work per fortnight while classes are running 8105
Student visa — subclass 500
One visa covers every level of CRICOS-registered study, from ELICOS to a doctorate, for the length of your course up to five years.
How to file, step by step
Create an ImmiAccount
One account per applicant, in the student's own name, with an email only you control. Never share the password with an agent.
Complete Form 157A online
The student visa application. Answer the GS questions inside the form. Every prior refusal, in any country, must be declared.
Attach the full evidence set
CoE, passport, financial evidence, English result, OSHC certificate, academic documents, GS answers, dependant documents. Lodge decision-ready — incomplete files sit in the queue.
Pay the visa application charge
Card payment inside ImmiAccount. Non-refundable regardless of outcome.
Complete health examinations
A HAP ID is generated after lodgement. Book with a panel physician only; results are uploaded directly by the clinic.
Provide biometrics if requested
Fingerprints and a photograph at an Australian Biometric Collection Centre, where required for your nationality.
Respond to any request for further information
You'll typically get 28 days. Answer inside the window, in full, in one submission. Silence is treated as an answer.
Grant — read the notice properly
Check the visa expiry date, the conditions listed, and whether your dependants were granted alongside you. There is no visa label in the passport; the grant notice is your evidence.
What is attached to a subclass 500
| Condition | What it requires |
|---|---|
| 8105 | No more than 48 hours of paid work per fortnight while your course is in session. Unlimited during scheduled course breaks. Work in aged care under an approved arrangement, and work that is a formal part of your course, may be exempt. |
| 8202 | Remain enrolled, maintain satisfactory attendance and satisfactory course progress. |
| 8501 | Maintain adequate health insurance (OSHC) for the whole of your stay. |
| 8516 | Continue to satisfy the criteria you were granted the visa on, including remaining in a course at the same level. |
| 8517 | Maintain adequate schooling arrangements for any school-age dependants who joined you for more than three months. |
| 8533 | Notify your provider of your Australian address within 7 days of arrival, and of any change within 7 days. |
| 8532 | Applies to students under 18 — approved welfare and accommodation arrangements must be maintained. |
- Financial capacity not established — the largest single category. Funds unexplained, too recent, or held by someone with no relationship to the applicant.
- Genuine Student requirement not met — course choice doesn't follow from the applicant's history and the answers don't bridge the gap.
- Document integrity — an altered or fabricated document anywhere in the file. Three-year exclusion.
- Course progression concerns — moving to a lower AQF level than a qualification already held, without explanation.
- English or health/character — an expired test, a home-edition test, or an undisclosed criminal matter.
You'll receive written reasons. Read exactly which criterion failed before deciding anything.
- Review: onshore refusals can generally be reviewed at the Administrative Review Tribunal within a strict deadline stated in the letter. Offshore student refusals usually have no merits review.
- Reapply: permitted, but only worth doing if you can fix the finding — new financial evidence, a different course with a coherent rationale, or a corrected disclosure.
- Declare it forever: the refusal must be disclosed in every future application to Australia and to most other countries.
- Get a MARA-registered agent or an immigration lawyer involved before reapplying. Repeating the same file produces the same result.
| Subclass | Who it is for | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| 500 Student | You | Course length, up to 5 years. Family can be included. |
| 590 Student Guardian | A parent or relative accompanying a student under 18 | Separate application, own charge. Cannot be added to the student's application. No work rights. |
| 485 Temporary Graduate | After you finish | Post-Higher Education Work and Post-Vocational Education Work streams. |
| 600 Visitor | Family visiting you | Tourist and Sponsored Family streams. |
| 407 Training | Occupational training after study | Requires an approved sponsor and a structured training plan. |
| 462 / 417 Work & Holiday | Some nationalities, aged 18–30 (35 for some) | An alternative to a student visa for short stays with unrestricted work. |
Arrival & the first 30 days
The administrative order matters. Get these in sequence and your first month costs less and moves faster.
- Book temporary accommodation for at least two weeks. Do not sign a 12-month lease from overseas, and never transfer a bond to someone you haven't met.
- Print or download the visa grant notice, CoE, offer letter and OSHC certificate.
- Carry no more than A$10,000 cash equivalent, or declare it.
- Check the biosecurity rules — undeclared food, seeds, wooden items and medicines attract on-the-spot fines.
- Bring prescriptions with a doctor's letter for any medication.
- Tell your provider your arrival date and book the airport pickup many universities offer free.
- SIM card — Telstra, Optus and Vodafone at the airport, or cheaper resellers (Amaysim, Boost, Belong) once you're in the city.
- Bank account — open online before you land; activate with your passport in a branch. CommBank, ANZ, NAB and Westpac all waive fees for students.
- Tax File Number — apply free at ato.gov.au. Without it your employer withholds tax at the top rate.
- Enrol and attend orientation — this is where you get your student card, timetable and, at most universities, the free legal and employment advice service.
- Register your address with the provider within 7 days 8533.
- Transport concession — available in VIC, QLD, WA, SA, ACT, TAS and NT. NSW does not offer travel concessions to most international students.
Where students actually live
| Option | Weekly, indicative | Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose-built student accommodation | $380–$650 | Furnished, bills included, no bond drama, contracts by semester. Expensive but the safest first landing. |
| University residential college | $400–$750 | Often catered. Applications open long before the intake and fill. |
| Sharehouse room | $220–$420 | The default after semester one. Inspect in person, meet the housemates, and get a written agreement. |
| Homestay | $320–$450 | Meals included, good for a first three months and for under-18s. |
| Own studio / one-bedroom | $450–$800 | Requires rental history and proof of income most new arrivals don't have. |
Working while you study
48 hours a fortnight in session, unlimited in breaks — and the same legal rights as any Australian worker, regardless of what an employer tells you.
What 48 hours a fortnight is worth
Against your living costs
- Fix the resume format first. Two pages, no photograph, no date of birth, no marital status, no passport number. Australian employers discard resumes with these.
- Get a TFN and an ABN-free mindset. If an employer asks you to get an ABN for ordinary casual work, that is usually sham contracting — you lose super, leave and minimum-wage protection.
- Certificates that open doors: RSA (alcohol service), RSG (gaming), White Card (construction sites), Barista course, Food Safety, First Aid. Each is a day and $70–$180.
- Where the jobs are: Seek, Indeed, your university's careers portal, plus walking into hospitality venues with a printed resume in the mid-afternoon lull.
- On-campus first. Library, IT help desk, student ambassador, note-taker, research assistant, tutoring. Higher pay, understands your timetable, counts as Australian professional experience.
- Ask for the award. "Which award and classification am I employed under?" is a normal question. An employer who can't answer it is a warning.
- Minimum wage applies to everyone. Your visa status does not reduce it.
- Casual work attracts a 25% loading; weekends, evenings and public holidays attract penalty rates under most awards.
- A payslip within one working day of being paid, showing hours, rate, tax and super.
- Superannuation at 12% paid to your fund. You can claim it when you leave Australia permanently.
- Unpaid "trials" beyond a brief demonstration are illegal.
- Workers' compensation if you're injured at work.
After graduation — subclass 485
The Temporary Graduate visa is a one-shot bridge between study and skilled migration. The rules tightened sharply through 2024–2026; the deadlines are hard.
| Stream | Who | Stay | Requirements beyond the basics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Post-Higher Education Work 485 | Bachelor, Masters (coursework or research), Doctoral graduates | 2 years bachelor & masters coursework; 3 years masters by research; 3 years doctoral. Indian nationals get an extra year for certain qualifications under the Australia–India MMPA. | No skills assessment needed. Two academic years of study in Australia. |
| Post-Vocational Education Work 485 | Associate degree, diploma or trade qualification holders | 18 months | Positive skills assessment in an occupation on the skilled occupation list, matched to your qualification. |
| Second Post-Higher Education Work 485 | Holders of a first 485 who studied and lived in a regional area | 1 extra year (Category 2) or 2 extra years (Category 3) | Must have lived in the regional area on the first 485. Separate charge. |
| Replacement stream 485 | Holders whose stay was disrupted by COVID-era travel restrictions | Matches the original grant | Closing cohort — check current eligibility. |
The 35-year cap has three carve-outs, all up to age 49 and all in the Post-Higher Education Work stream:
- Masters by Research graduates from a CRICOS-registered institution. Masters by coursework does not qualify.
- Doctoral / PhD graduates from a CRICOS-registered institution.
- Hong Kong SAR and British National (Overseas) passport holders, across all streams.
Age is assessed on the date the department receives your application — not the decision date, not your graduation date. At 50 or over there is no pathway.
- You must be in Australia to lodge, and must have held a student visa within the previous six months.
- English is a single in-centre sitting within 12 months. Home editions and combined score reports are rejected.
- Australian Federal Police check must be recent and is often the slowest item — order it before you're ready to lodge.
- No visa hopping: under current rules 485 holders are generally prevented from applying for a new student visa onshore.
- Health insurance is required for the whole 485 period, for you and every dependant — OVHC, not OSHC.
- It's one shot. Use it to gain skilled employment in your nominated occupation, not to keep working the hospitality job.
The two-year plan that actually leads to PR
Months 0–3
- Lodge the skills assessment for your nominated occupation immediately — some take 3–6 months.
- Sit a superior English test (IELTS 8 / PTE 79) for 20 points, not the 6.5 minimum.
- Get any professional registration underway — AHPRA, Engineers Australia, teacher registration.
Months 3–12
- Get into skilled work in the nominated occupation, even at graduate pay. Hospitality hours don't count toward skilled employment points.
- Submit an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect and keep it current.
- Research each state's nomination criteria — they change with the program year and reward local work history.
Months 12–24
- Bank the Australian work experience points at the 12-month and 3-year marks.
- Have the employer-sponsored conversation early — a Skills in Demand nomination has no points test.
- If points are short, model a regional move seriously: 491 nomination plus 15 points changes the arithmetic.
Permanent residence
Three routes: points-tested skilled migration, employer sponsorship, and the regional provisional path that converts after three years.
| Subclass | What it is | Needs | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 189 Skilled Independent | Points-tested, no sponsor | Occupation on the MLTSSL, positive skills assessment, invitation from the pool | PR on grant. Live and work anywhere. The most competitive route — invitations for popular occupations sit well above the 65-point floor. |
| 190 Skilled Nominated | State or territory nomination, worth 5 points | Occupation on the state's list, commitment to live there (usually 2–3 years) | PR on grant. The realistic route for many who fall short of 189 cut-offs. |
| 491 Skilled Work Regional | Provisional, 5 years, worth 15 points | State nomination or eligible family sponsorship, occupation on the relevant list | Not PR. Converts via 191 after 3 years of living and working in a designated regional area with income above the threshold. |
| 482 Skills in Demand | Employer-sponsored, temporary — replaced the TSS 482 | Approved sponsor, occupation on the CSOL, salary above the relevant threshold | No points test. Core Skills, Specialist Skills and Essential Skills pathways. Leads to 186. |
| 186 Employer Nomination Scheme | Employer-sponsored permanent | Nomination by an approved employer, skills assessment for many occupations, generally under 45 | PR on grant. Direct Entry and Temporary Residence Transition streams. |
| 494 Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional | Provisional, 5 years, regional employer | Regional employer nomination, skills assessment | Converts via 191 after 3 years. |
| 858 National Innovation | Global talent / exceptional achievement | Internationally recognised record in a target sector, a nominator in the field | PR on grant. Narrow but fast for genuinely outstanding candidates. |
| 820/801 · 309/100 Partner | Partner of an Australian citizen or PR | Genuine relationship evidence, sponsorship | Temporary then permanent. Independent of your skilled pathway. |
Score your skilled profile
Based on the points test currently in force for subclasses 189, 190 and 491. A rewrite was flagged in the 2026–27 Budget and is under consultation — invitations already issued will be honoured under the current matrix.
Student to PR, end to end
Confirm the assessing authority's requirements before enrolling — some demand specific accreditation or a minimum number of units.
This unlocks the Australian study requirement (5 points) and the 485. Regional study adds 5 more.
Hard deadline. Have the AFP check and in-centre English result ready in advance.
Then lodge an EOI. Keep it updated — points are assessed at invitation.
Or a state nomination, or an employer nomination under 482/186. Run more than one track.
189/190/186 are permanent on grant. 491/494 convert via 191 after three qualifying regional years.
See the citizenship stage — the residence clock includes lawful time before PR.
Citizenship
Conferral is the pathway for former students. The residence clock counts your lawful time in Australia, including student and 485 years — but at least the final twelve months must be as a permanent resident.
- 4 years lawfully in Australia immediately before applying — student and temporary visa time counts, provided it was lawful.
- At least the last 12 months as a permanent resident.
- No more than 12 months outside Australia in the whole four-year period.
- No more than 90 days outside Australia in the final twelve months.
- Good character, and an intention to reside in or maintain a close association with Australia.
Different rules apply to New Zealand citizens, to children, to spouses of Australian citizens in some circumstances, and to people born in Australia. Special residence provisions exist for certain occupations requiring frequent travel.
- Check eligibility with the department's residence calculator before paying anything.
- Apply online through ImmiAccount with identity documents, your travel history and police certificates where required. The application charge increased on 1 July 2026 — confirm the current figure.
- Sit the citizenship test — 20 multiple-choice questions on Australia's democratic beliefs, rights, liberties, history and government, drawn from the official resource booklet. You need 75% overall and all five values questions correct.
- Interview and document verification at the same appointment.
- Approval, then a citizenship ceremony where you make the pledge. Most are held by local councils; you must attend within 12 months of approval.
- Apply for an Australian passport after the ceremony.
Permanent residence
- Live, work and study indefinitely
- Medicare
- Sponsor eligible relatives
- Travel facility expires after 5 years — you need a Resident Return Visa 155 to re-enter after that
- Waiting periods apply to most social security payments
- Cannot vote in federal elections
Citizenship adds
- An Australian passport, with no re-entry conditions ever
- The vote, and jury service
- Eligibility for the public service and the defence force
- Children born overseas can acquire citizenship by descent
- Consular assistance abroad
Realistic timing
A student who starts a two-year masters, takes a two-year 485, then gets PR in the second 485 year is typically looking at five to seven years from arrival to citizenship eligibility — longer if PR takes more than one attempt or a 491 sits in the middle, which adds three regional years before the 191.
In-demand occupations, placements & graduate jobs
Where the shortages actually are, what they pay, and how graduates get hired. Search or filter the table.
| Occupation | Sector | Indicative salary | Shortage | Assessing authority | Notes |
|---|
Salaries are indicative full-time ranges and vary sharply by state, seniority and sector. Occupation lists are revised by Jobs and Skills Australia — confirm your ANZSCO code is on the list your visa uses before committing to a course.
- Ask before you enrol. Whether internationals get clinical or professional placements — and whether they're guaranteed — varies by program and is the single biggest hidden risk in health and education degrees.
- Work counted as part of your course is generally exempt from the 48-hour cap, because it is registered on your CoE. Confirm in writing with your provider.
- Professional Year programs in accounting, IT and engineering run 44 weeks, cost roughly $9,000–$12,000, include a 12-week internship, and are worth 5 points.
- Industry-based learning at the technology universities (RMIT, UTS, QUT, Swinburne, Curtin) is a genuine differentiator — several run 6–12 month paid placements.
- Volunteering with a recognised not-for-profit is unpaid and does not count toward the work-hour cap. It builds local references, which is what most graduates actually lack.
- Graduate programs open in March for the following February start, at large employers, banks, the Big Four, engineering firms and some government departments. Many require citizenship or PR — check before you invest a week in the application.
- Target the mid-market instead. Firms of 20–200 people hire year-round, sponsor more readily, and interview faster.
- Australian-format resume, Australian phone number, Australian address. Applications from overseas numbers get filtered.
- LinkedIn matters here. Most recruiters check it before the interview; a bare profile costs you.
- Say your work rights plainly. "I hold a 485 with full work rights until [date] and I'm pursuing PR" is a better answer than avoiding the question.
- Use the university's career service after you graduate — most keep alumni access for 12–24 months, including resume review and employer events.
Cost of living & managing expenses
What a month actually costs in each city, and a budget you can adjust.
Annual, and against the evidence floor
Hours of work per fortnight to cover it
| City | Room, weekly | Monthly total, moderate | Transport concession | Character |
|---|
- Sending money home badly. Bank telegraphic transfers cost 3–5% in spread. Wise, OFX and Remitly are a fraction of that.
- Paying rent weekly in cash. No record, no bond protection, no evidence of rental history when you want a better place.
- Groceries at the convenience end. Aldi, weekend markets and the ethnic grocers near every campus are 30–40% cheaper than the two big chains.
- Textbooks new. Library reserve, older editions, and the student Facebook groups.
- Phone plans on contract. Prepaid resellers on the same networks cost half.
- Not claiming the tax refund. If you earned under $18,200 and had tax withheld, you get all of it back — lodge from 1 July at ato.gov.au, free.
- Leaving super behind. Claim a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment when you leave permanently.
- University hardship grants and emergency loans — every Australian university has them, most are not advertised, and international students are eligible. Ask the student support office directly.
- Food pantries and free breakfast programs run on most campuses through the student association.
- Free legal service at the student union covers tenancy, employment and consumer disputes.
- Counselling is free and confidential at your provider, and does not affect your visa.
- Fee payment plans — providers will usually negotiate rather than report a non-payment. Ask before the due date, not after.
Family — partners, children & parents
Bringing a partner on your student visa, and getting parents here to visit — or, eventually, to stay.
- Declare them in your application whether or not they travel with you. An undeclared family member generally cannot join you later.
- Extra funds must be evidenced: about $10,394 for a partner and $4,449 per child per year, plus $13,502 per school-age child for schooling 8517.
- Partner work rights: a dependant of a student in a masters by coursework or higher generally gets unrestricted work rights; a dependant of a bachelor or VET student is capped at 48 hours a fortnight like you.
- Relationship evidence must be substantial — marriage certificate plus joint finances, correspondence, photographs over time, and statements from people who know you both.
- School-age children attending a government school pay international fees in most states — budget $10,000–$16,000 per child per year.
600 Visitor visa
The standard route. Tourist stream for an ordinary visit; Sponsored Family stream where you or a relative sponsors them, which can require a bond but is often approved where a tourist application would not be. Typical grant is 3, 6 or 12 months' stay; some applicants with a strong compliance history receive validity of 18 months, 3 years or 5 years with a stay limit of 12 months in any 18-month period.
870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary)
For long stays: 3 or 5 years at a time, up to a 10-year cumulative maximum. No balance-of-family test — the only parent visa that waives it. The sponsoring child must be an Australian citizen, PR or eligible NZ citizen and meet an income threshold. Two instalments; no work rights; private health insurance required. Processing has been running months rather than years.
The honest picture
| Subclass | Type | Indicative cost per parent | Indicative wait | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 103 Parent | Permanent, non-contributory, offshore | ~$5,500 | 30+ years | Capped and queued. For most new applicants the wait exceeds a realistic lifetime. |
| 804 Aged Parent | Permanent, non-contributory, onshore | ~$5,500 | 30+ years | Parent must be at pension age (67). Bridging visa while waiting is the practical benefit. |
| 143 Contributory Parent | Permanent, offshore | ~$50,000 | 12–15 years | First instalment at lodgement, second (~$43,600) at decision. Assurance of Support bond on top. |
| 864 Contributory Aged Parent | Permanent, onshore | ~$48,000+ | 12+ years | Pension age required. Cannot have held or applied for an 870 first — sequence matters. |
| 173 / 884 Contributory (Temporary) | Temporary, 2 years, converts to 143/864 | Staged | 5–8 years | Spreads the cost over time; the parent lives in Australia while the permanent application processes. |
| 870 Sponsored Parent | Temporary, 3 or 5 years | ~$5,700 / ~$11,500 | Months | No balance-of-family test. The realistic option for most families. |

Who is actually allowed to advise you
In Australia, only a MARA-registered migration agent or an Australian legal practitioner may give immigration assistance. Verify any agent's registration number on the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority register before you pay anything. Education agents are not migration agents; they can help with admission, not with visa strategy. Never hand over your passport, never let anyone else control your ImmiAccount, and never sign a form you have not read.
